NATO conducted its biggest airborne drills since the end of the Cold War at the Smardan military base in Romania on Wednesday. Around 240 soldiers from Italy, Spain, the US and Romania parachuted over a field containing some 4,800 troops from the 11 different NATO countries taking part in the Swift Response 15 air exercises. According to NATO officer Lieutenant Colonel Stephen J. Townsend, the drills are being conducted to “improve our readiness, sharpen our knife” and “demonstrating capability.”
