The daughter of Soviet hero, Meliton Kantaria, was among hundreds of veterans, their descendants and commemorators of Soviet soldiers who marched to celebrate Victory Day in Athens, Greece on Tuesday. Celebrators marched to Syntagma Square where they gathered to hear speeches and hold prayers outside the Russian Orthodox Church. Kantaria was one of the Soviet soldiers credited to have hoisted the Soviet flag over the Reichstag on April 30 1945, together with Mikhail Yegorov and Oleksiy Berest. “When we asked him how it was to climb up there, he never answered. One time my son asked him and he began telling him, only to stop a little later, as he had started crying," Tsiala Kantaria recalled. The march was one of hundreds of commemorative events around Russia and the rest of the world celebrating the anniversary of the official capitulation of Nazi Germany at the end of World War II.
