Despite playing a part in eliminating Spain in the round of 16, the official La Liga Twitter account has hailed Denis Cheryshev for his stunning goal which opened the scoring in Russia’s quarter-final tie with Croatia.

Cheryshev, who plays for Villarreal in La Liga and has lived in Spain since he was a child, opened the scoring in Sochi with a stunning long-range strike in the 31st minute before being withdrawn by coach Stanislav Cherchesov midway through the second half.

A goal from Andrej Kramaric leveled things after Cheryshev’s opener but the Russian midfielder’s impact was crucial in extending the game into extra time and in doing so, earned the appreciation not just of every Russian in the world but also the La Liga Twitter account.

Cheryshev has now scored four goals in the World Cup since coming on for an injured Alan Dzagoev in their first tournament match against Saudi Arabia.
