Violence broke out after several thousand Mexican teachers and education workers took to the streets of Oaxaca in southern Mexico on Saturday. The activists were rallying against a new education reform law that obliges them to have their skills evaluated in tests. The clashes were reportedly instigated by members of the National Coordinating Council of Education Workers (CNTE). Riot police used tear gas to disperse the protesters. Around 6,000 education workers were due to be evaluated on Saturday. The CNTE opposes the evaluations, saying they are unfair and could lead to mass lay-offs. The government says they are needed in order to enhance competitiveness in the education sector.
