Some 5,000 people took to the streets of Riga in a torchlight procession to commemorate War Heroes Remembrance Day also known as Lacplesis Day on Wednesday. The procession marks the anniversary of the Latvian armed forces repelling an attack mounted by the Western Russian Volunteer Army on Riga in 1919. Following the Russian Revolution, the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic signed a peace treaty on 11 August 1920.
