The French president gave a triumphant thumbs-up after Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti gave France a 1-0 lead against Belgium in Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final against against Belgium at St. Petersburg Stadium.
Macron, who was joined at the stadium by King Philippe of Belgium and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, couldn’t hide his happiness at Umtiti’s headed strike - but footage from the game showed the French president offering a conciliatory handshake to the Belgian monarch.
Queen Mathilde of Belgium was also present at the stadium.
Umtiti's strike proved to be the only goal of the game as France qualified for the World Cup final at the expense of the Belgians. Didier Deschamps' side will now face the winner of Wednesday's tie between England and Croatia in Moscow.
