The first ever Russian champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship says in a social media post that the teamwork displayed by Stanislav Cherchesov’s side was key in knocking out former champions Spain in Moscow on Sunday.
The Dagestani fighter, who is undefeated in his professional career, has urged Russia to keep the momentum going into the World Cup quarter finals after they became the lowest ranked team to ever reach the tournament’s last eight by defeating “legends” Spain on penalties.
“Unreal emotions, it was clear that the boys were playing for everyone, all the same every rivals name was a legend,” Nurmagomedov wrote in Russian on Instagram.
“Let's keep going,” he added.
Croatia stand between Russia and a place in the semi finals in a match which takes place on Saturday in the Fisht Stadium.
Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, is expected to face former champion Conor McGregor in the first defense of his UFC lightweight title later this year.
