Thousands of torch-bearing protesters marched through the streets of Buenos Aires on Tuesday to demand the immediate release of jailed indigenous activist Milagro Sala. Members of the Tupac Amaru, the Argentine Workers' Central Union (CTA), the Association of State Workers (ATE) and other unions as well as human rights organizations joined the demonstration. Activists arrived at the Sheraton Hotel, where a series of Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) hearings will be held until Friday, May 26.

Sala is a leader of the Tupac Amaru neighborhood association, part of the ATE in Jujuy, and a leading figure in the Movimiento piquetero of Argentina. She was arrested on embezzlement charges on January 16, 2016, after taking part in a protest against reforms to social funding introduced by Jujuy's local government.
