Ferguson grand jury decision divides America

25 Nov, 2014 00:05 / Updated 9 years ago

A wave of unrest – violent protests with arrests, as well as peaceful marches – swept over Ferguson and other cities across the USA after police officer Darren Wilson was acquitted by a grand jury of lawfully killing unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

03 December 2014

St. Louis County police are investigating Louis Head, Michael Brown’s stepfather, for comments he made to a Ferguson crowd after the grand jury decision not to indict Darren Wilson, reported The Associated Press.

Widely-circulated video showed Brown's mother, Lesley McSpadden, on top of a car and breaking down as the announcement blares on a stereo. Head, her husband, comforts her then repeatedly yells angry comments, including, "Burn this bitch down!"

"There's a wrong, but then you need to know why that wrong was committed." #Brown cousin Ty Pruitt on Louis Head outburst #Ferguson

— CNN Tonight (@CNNTonight) December 3, 2014

The police are looking into whether Head’s comments could be considered as inciting a riot.

“He just spoke out of anger. It's one thing to speak, and it's a different thing to act. He did not act. He just spoke out of anger,” Lesley McSpadden said in an interview with CNN last week. "When you're that hurt and the system has did you this wrong, you may say some things as well. We've all spoke out of anger before."

Head’s comments are part of a broader investigation into arson, vandalism and looting that followed the grand jury announcement, according to Brian Schellman, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police. Twelve commercial buildings were destroyed by fire, and there was extensive looting.

If Louis Head is being investigated for incitement, then @CivilRights needs to investigate Bob McCulloch for the same. #Ferguson

A Washington state Facebook user was arrested and charged on Tuesday for allegedly making repeated interstate threats to kill a recently resigned Ferguson police officer identified by federal authorities only as “D.W.,” members of the officer’s family and other law enforcement officers said.

There has been no confirmation, but it is suspected the user was referring to Darren Wilson.

The FBI agent in the International Terrorism Squad of the Seattle field division filed a complaint against Jaleel Tariq Abdul-Jabbaar, claiming he started posting threats on his Facebook page shortly after the August 9 shooting of Michael Brown all the way through late November.

In one of Abdul-Jabbaar's posts, he stated: “We need to kill (the officer) and anything that has a badge on.” He also used Facebook communications to attempt to acquire a firearm despite having a felony record.

Abdul-Jabbaar faces three counts of making interstate threats. Each count is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Protests continued to take place in Missouri, where roughly 300 students walked out of two high schools in the Ferguson area. Reports online suggest that some teachers also walked out with students.

US President Barack Obama will meet at the White House on Monday with Cabinet members and civil rights leaders on issues related to Ferguson, Missouri, where a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer in the death of an unarmed black teenager.

The meeting with Cabinet members will include a discussion of a review Obama ordered in August of federal programs that provide equipment to local law enforcement agencies, the White House said in a statement on Sunday.

Obama will also meet with elected officials, civil rights leaders and law enforcement officials from around the country to discuss "how communities and law enforcement can work together to build trust to strengthen neighborhoods across the country," the statement said. (Reuters)

At least 10 activists, including one teenager, were arrested overnight in Portland, Oregon, amid on-going protests against a grand jury decision not to indict a white police officer for killing an unarmed black teen.

Ferguson police deployed live ammunition and lethal weapons after four gunshots were heard near a police station, where at least 200 people had gathered for a demonstration.

According to police, the shots came from neither the police, nor the protesters. It was a lone gunman thought to be carrying an AK-47.

"We did not deploy any lethal weapons tonight until the shots were fired down the street. And that's when we decided, well, we need gun power, we don't have enough fire power, so that's why we deployed the rifles,” Sergeant Stevener told Ruptly.

The station was shut down within half an hour, leaving BART officials desperately trying to find stranded passengers other modes of transportation.

Protesters in Milan, Italy, threw flares at the US Consulate there on Wednesday in order to protest the Ferguson grand jury decision. In the video, demonstrators can be seen holding a banner that reads, "We the people, fight the power, unite the struggles."

They can also be heard chanting, "No justice, no peace. F**k the police."

More than 400 people across the United States have been arrested since the grand jury decision has come in, according to Reuters. Protests have taken place in dozens of cities, including Boston, Detroit, New York, and Los Angeles.

26 November 2014

Police in Los Angeles arrested 183 people Tuesday night, significantly more than law enforcement in other cities across the United States. Of these arrests, 167 were made for disturbing the peace, according to the LA Times.

Demonstrators made headlines Tuesday evening for gathering near the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters, where the majority of arrests were made. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said police gave activists every opportunity to express themselves, but began detaining people when they crossed the line.

“The police department of Los Angeles wants to facilitate genuine 1st Amendment activity,” Beck said. “However, we will not condone or will not allow individuals to trample others’ 1st Amendment rights.”

Activist and public intellectual Cornel West called the situation unfolding in Ferguson “the end of the age of Obama.”

The controversial professor made the comments during an interview with CNN International, saying, “It’s a very sad end. We began with tremendous hope and we end with great despair.”

West said the US has a “Jim Crow criminal justice system” that has failed to work properly for minority communities, and particularly for those who are poor.

#Ferguson: The sad end of the Age of Obama

— Cornel West (@CornelWest) November 25, 2014

“It’s very sad that the Wall Street executives can go free and drone droppers can go free, torturers can go free – but police who kill our precious children walk free,” he said. “We weep and we do fight back, but there’s been a class war and a kind of racial war against black and brown youth.”

West noted that only one in 11,000 grand juries fail to deliver indictments. He also said that despite having a black president and attorney general, the federal government has failed to prosecute a single in which police have killed a black youth.

Obama's empty neutrality, moral bankruptcy and political cowardice is now undeniable to even his most loyal cheerleaders and boot-lickers!

— Cornel West (@CornelWest) November 25, 2014

Asked why he is so critical of the president, West said that he will always fight for those who are suffering, regardless of their race.

“Unfortunately, President Obama chose a Wall Street presidency,” West added. “He chose a drone presidency… he chose massive surveillance… and he chose not to even give one speech that focuses on the Jim Crow criminal justice system that’s been targeting poor black and brown youth.”

Police in Ferguson arrested a total of 58 people Tuesday night, a notable increase over the previously reported number of 45. According to the Associated Press, seven of the people arrested face felony charges – four for allegedly assaulting a cop and three for “armed criminal action.”

St. Louis County Police have confirmed that the body of the man found dead in a vehicle Tuesday morning in Ferguson was burned and shot, CBS News reported. The body belonged to 20-year-old DeAndre Joshua, who was killed near the spot where Michael Brown died on August 9.

Law enforcement is treating the death as a homicide as they continue to investigate. It’s unclear if the man’s death is connected to Monday night’s protests following the grand jury decision, but police are not ruling out the possibility.

Speaking to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, local resident Richard Taylor – who lives near the area Joshua’s body was found – said he saw and heard four people talking about looting and killing someone Monday evening. When he called police, however, no one responded.

Meanwhile, the young man’s family is heartbroken.

"I'm still stunned because he never had any problems. He was a good kid," relative Brian Joshua, 45 said while other family members cried. "It's like somebody just hit us with a brick."

Police pepper sprayed protesters as they attempted to storm St. Louis city hall on Wednesday afternoon, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Officers arrested three protesters after the crowd failed to disperse following a police order. A line of about 50 police officers confronted the crowd as they marched through the city, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

British comedian Russell Brand took to his web series The Trews to criticize US mainstream media framing of the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, which he described as a “microcosmic cauldron of centuries of racial oppression."

Video has surfaced out of Ferguson, Missouri showing a brief but tense impasse that ends with a mask-clad looter standing down to a female pizza shop employee as nearby businesses burn to the ground.

Two FBI agents were shot early Wednesday morning in north St. Louis County, according to local broadcaster KSDK. It’s not immediately clear if the incident is linked to the overnight unrest in nearby Ferguson.

The agents were shot at while they were on duty near the intersection of N. Hanley Road and Monroe Avenue, investigating reports of a person barricaded inside a house.

The officers received non-life threatening injuries, according to Shawn McGuire, a county police spokesman.

Police say 44 people have been arrested after a second night of violence in Ferguson. Law enforcement officers confiscated two weapons, while numerous bottles, rocks, pieces of concrete, and a Molotov cocktail were thrown at officers. The majority of those detained were for minor offenses, with St Louis police chief Jon Belmar saying, “Generally it was a much better night,” at a press conference.

Obama is considering making a trip to Ferguson in light of the grand jury decision, the Washington Times reported. The trip wouldn't occur until after "things calm down a little bit," said White House spokesman Eric Schultz.

“That's something still under consideration, and as soon as we have a determination on that we'll let you know,” Schultz said.

President Barack Obama said that the frustrations of minority communities regarding law enforcement are “rooted in realities,” but he condemned the vandalism and destruction of property that broke out in Ferguson on Monday night.

“Burning buildings, torching cars, destroying property, putting people at risk...there’s no excuse for it,” Obama said, saying that those responsible will be prosecuted. "I have no sympathy at all for destroying your own communities.”

Obama said that concerns over police behavior and the grand jury decision need to be addressed peacefully.

A man was found dead inside a car in Ferguson, where he reportedly suffered from burns and gunshot wounds, according to the Guardian. The man, identified as DeAndre Joshua, was found near the spot where Michael Brown was killed. It's unclear if there is a connection between last night's unrest and the death. A homicide inquiry is being conducted by police.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced that more than 2,200 National Guard members will be deployed in the Ferguson area tonight, up drastically from the 700 or so that were out on Monday.

“We’ll have a significant number out tonight,” Nixon said. “We’re going to continue to up their numbers here and work with the unified command to make sure we keep things calm and safe.”

The Guardsmen will be working in shifts, according to the governor, and they will be ready to respond in the event that they're needed.

After some commotion in the back of the Missouri church, people began to file out as Crump announced that the presser was over. Crump then came back on, and the briefing resumed.

Sharpton has accused an unidentified blogger of causing the disruption.

Crump has condemned calls to burn Ferguson, as well as the Monday night violence. Sharpton agrees that there is a better way, and insists the system must meet activists half way.

During a media briefing held by Mike Brown’s family, Reverend Al Sharpton sharply criticizes the legal process and the concerted effort by the prosecutor to discredit the victim and undermine the credibility of the witnesses.

Reverend Sharpton says that, though unsurprising, the verdict was deeply heartbreaking and urges the public to the fight for police accountability in the US.

Sharpton cautions against violence and calls for a commitment to peaceful protest methods. The Reverend calls on civil rights activists and the public to join forces for constructive change. Sharpton says that an emergency civil rights meeting is to be held in Washington, DC next week, during which mass marches, legislation, and boycotts will be discussed

Anthony Gray, attorney for the Brown family, criticizes the grand jury verdict during a press conference and urges the public to read Wilson's testimony. Gray reminds the public that there is still a pending federal investigation.

Brown Family spokesperson Benjamin Crump says Mike Brown's legacy should incite people to change an unfair system wherein "the police that are supposed to protect and serve us continue to kill our members and our community."

Crump urges for the implementation of new legislation across cities in the US, which would force all police officers to wear a body camera at all times.

During a press conference, Brown family spokesperson Benjamin Crump says that Officer Wilson’s claims are not consistent with physical evidence.

Protestors set fire to a police car in Ferguson amid violence following the grand jury's acquittal of Officer Darren Wilson.

The body of a black male in his 20s was found in a Ferguson neighborhood in an apparent homicide, according to KTVI FOX 2 News, a St. Louis local news channel. The victim was found in a white Pontiac with Illinois license plates. The driver's side window was shot out.

In Seattle, police report that officers have arrested five people during the Ferguson protests. Officials say protesters threw rocks, bottles and canned food at officers, according to the Seattle Times.

UN human rights chief, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, said the effect of race related issued on U.S. law enforcement is troubling, in a statement. Though unwilling to comment specifically about the fallout following the grand jury’s acquittal of Darren Wilson, he said, “I am deeply concerned at the disproportionate number of young African Americans who die in encounters with police officers, as well as the disproportionate number of African Americans in U.S. prisons and the disproportionate number of African Americans on Death Row.”
