The Syrian Arab Army cleared the final stretch of militant-held highway between the cities of Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor, Sunday, as government forces continue to make ground against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). The road is seen as key strategic territory in the fight against IS. Fighting took place to the south-west of Deir ez-Zor, on a stretch of road leading from Al-Malha. SAA units were able to link up with government troops at the Panorama entrance to the city. The entire 200 km long (125 mile) highway is now in government hands. The gain comes just days after Syrian forces broke the IS siege of Deir ez-Zor with the support of the Russian Air Force.
