Truck drivers protesting alleged arson attacks on their vehicles by Mapuche rights militants scuffled with members of the indigenous group during a demonstration in the Chilean capital on Thursday. The drivers claim their trucks had been torched in the south-central region of Araucania and wanted to transport some of the burnt out vehicles to Santiago as part of the protest. Their convoy was stopped by authorities on a highway outside of the city, however. Police shot water cannons to quell the Mapuche Indians and supporters of the protesting drivers who were brawling in front of La Moneda palace and in one of the capital city’s main squares.
