People hurled oranges at each other in the northern Italian city of Ivrea on Sunday, as part of the annual Carnival of Ivrea, which ends on Shrove Tuesday.
Teams of orange handlers on foot threw oranges at those riding in carts. The origins of the battle are not known for sure, though one theory says it is a reenactment of the civil war between Napoleon’s troops and the people of Ivrea, with those on foot representing the townspeople, and those in carts, the troops.
