Authorities brought water cannon, tear gas and riot police onto the streets of Santiago, Thursday, in order to disperse protesters during a student demonstration in the city centre. The clashes began as some of the thousands of students who were marching through the centre of the Chilean capital chose to divert from the agreed route of the protest. Police pursued them, as the students moved towards the area near Andres Bello street. At least three students were arrested. The demonstrators aimed to pressure Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and the government to fulfil their promises to provide free higher education for all.
