Tens of thousands of Hazaras marched through central Kabul on Monday, demanding the government scrap plans to reroute the TUTAP power line. The 500 kilovolt TUTAP transmission line is planned for 2018, and will connect the Central Asian countries of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with Afghanistan and Pakistan, providing electricity for up to 10 million people in 10 Afghan provinces, including Kabul. The line was originally set to pass through the central Bamiyan province, which has a large Hazara population, but the government decided to reroute it through the mountainous Salang region, aiming to save millions of dollars.
