A number of arrests were made as protesters and police clashed during a demonstration in the villages surrounding the capital of Bahrain, Manama, on Friday. Protesters had been rallying for six days, demanding the release of Shia opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman, who was arrested on December 28 and charged on Monday. Several protesters were reportedly injured during the clashes. Bahrain is a majority Shia country ruled by a Sunni minority.
