Around 1,000 students hit the streets of Turin – the city in northern Italy, capital of the Piedmont region, to protest against the austerity policy of Enrico Letta's government. Clashes broke out as smoke and paint bombs were lobbed at the riot police.
After marching from Piazza Arbarello to the Piazza Castello, protesters clashed with police and launched colorful bombs which emitted red smoke. Police used batons in response and several arrests followed. The Italian national military police was then dispatched to secure the entrance of the Palazzo della Ragione, where the presidential office of the regional council is based.
