Wind and rain pounded Havana’s landmark Malecon sea-wall, as Hurricane Irma swept across the Cuban capital causing widespread flooding. The 8km (5 mile) stretch of coast was hit with waves up to 26 feet high. Last-minute evacuations of up to 10,000 residents were organized in Havana. Irma is being called the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, having already hit and devastated several Caribbean island nations, including Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
