Police deployed tear gas and water cannon against Kurdish protesters in the Sur district of Diyarbakir on Tuesday, as clashes intensified after 28 days of curfew in the southeastern region of Turkey. Trade union workers and activists rallied in front of the Diyarbakir Municipal, while police forces built barricades in the city to stop the protesters and closed entrances and exits to the city.
An estimated 171 Turkish security forces personnel, 195 militants and 157 civilians were killed between January 1 and December 5, 2015, according to statistics published by the Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV).
