Thousands of National League for Democracy (NLD) supporters took to the streets of Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar on Monday, to celebrate an expected victory as polls suggest the party has secured 70 percent of the vote. Activists waved flags and banners, danced and sang for hours, expressing their joy at the election results. Headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD has apparently won the electoral race against the ruling Union Solidarity Development Party, which is made up largely of former junta members and has been in power since 2011. In the 1990 general election, the NLD won 59 percent of the national vote and 81 percent of seats in Parliament, although Aung San Suu Kyi was detained under house arrest before the elections.
