Clashes broke out between police and protesters in Exarchia, downtown Athens, on Tuesday following a demonstration held in solidarity with prisoners currently on hunger strike in the Greek capital. Demonstrators set cars and bins on fire and hurled objects at the police, attacked the offices of the PASOK party, causing damage to the entrance of the building. They also occupied a building belonging to the Polytechnic University of Athens. Activists called for the abolition of 'C Type' prisons that were established by the PASOK government, and the immediate release of the relatives of members of the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei group. Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei is an anarchist activist organization, representatives of which are currently incarcerated and on hunger strike. Since coming to power, the Syriza government has published a draft calling for the abolition of these prisons and a vote is expected to take place in parliament soon.
