Armed forces and protesters exchanged fire during a rally in the Mare favela, Rio de Janeiro on Monday where around 800 people gathered to protest police brutality. Activists stopped traffic on the busy 'Avenue Brasil' for a few minutes before the shooting began.
The Mare favela has been seeing high presence of police and military since March 2014, when over 1,000 police officers entered the favela, in an effort by the Brazilian authorities to fight crime before the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
