Rugby star Folau found guilty of conduct breach over 'hell awaits gay people' post

Rugby star Israel Folau has been found guilty of a code of conduct breach over a controversial social media post that claimed ‘hell awaits’ all sinners, including homosexuals.

A three-person panel that inspected the case determined that the fullback had committed a ‘high-level breach’ of his contract, putting his four-year deal with Rugby Australia on the verge of termination.

The three-day code of conduct hearing concluded on Tuesday in Sydney following two days of heated debate over Folau’s provocative publication, which caused a public stir worldwide.

It remains unknown what punishment will be chosen for the player, with possible sanctions ranging from a fine to the termination of his contract.

Rugby Australia said that the panel will “take further written submissions from the parties to consider the matter of sanction. A further update will be provided after the panel delivers its decision on sanction.”

The 30-year-old player has the right to appeal the panel’s decision. However, his chances of overturning the verdict look rather slim.

A devout Christian, Folau was issued with a breach notice by Rugby Australia last month after he shared more of his religious beliefs on social media, reminding sinners what will happen to them if they don’t repent.

Last year, the rugby star was also at the center of an anti-gay controversy after stating that gay people will go to hell “unless they repent of their sins and turn to God.”
