'Six US presidents tried but failed': US sanctions aim to divide Iranians & govt, Khamenei says
US sanctions against Iran tried but failed to create a rift between the people and the state, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said. Antagonism between the countries intensified after Washington opted out of a nuclear deal.

By imposing economic pressure on the Islamic republic, Washington is seeking to separate the nation from the system, Khamenei said, in comments released on his official website.

“Six US Presidents before the current one also made efforts but failed to achieve their vicious goals,” he added, saying “the enemy’s conspiracy” is to create a gap between the Iranian establishment and the nation.

The Supreme leader sees the coalitions Washington has formed in the region as weak attempts to interfere within Iran. “If the US had the power to defeat the Islamic Republic, they wouldn’t need to ally with the disgraceful states in the Middle East to create chaos and insecurity in Iran,” he noted.

It’s been over a month since Washington pulled out of the milestone Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iranian nuclear deal. The withdrawal came despite the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Tehran’s compliance with the deal on numerous occasions, and despite the attempts of world powers, including France and Germany, to talk US President Donald Trump out of the decision.

As Washington continues to threaten its allies into halting imports of Iranian oil, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has recently vowed to bring the US “to its knees."

“We will not give in [to pressure] and will maintain our national and historical dignity in the face of the US,” Rouhani stated earlier this week.

Reacting to Washington’s actions back in May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that Washington is currently trying to isolate Iran in order to “strangle” it and force it to change its policies. Russia doesn’t agree with assessments that rely on the premise that Iran is “the root of all problems in the region,” he stated, adding that the US may yet trigger “a total confrontation” with Tehran.
