Russia riding high in Euro Champs medals table after victory for cyclists, synchronized swimmers
Russian synchronized swimmer Svetlana Kolesnichenko claimed victory in the technical solo event in Glasgow on Monday, bringing her country an 11th gold and 22nd medal in total at the event.
Kolesnichenko’s flawlessly executed routine was merited a score of 93,4816 – a full two points ahead of the second-placed Ukrainian athlete Yelyzaveta Yakhno. Italy’s Linda Cerruti completed the podium with a result of 90,2282 points.
So far Russia’s “mermaids” synchronized swimmers have taken gold in each event at the tournament apart from the combined free routine, which they opted to miss.
On Sunday, Russian cyclists Darya Shmeleva and Anastasia Voynova finished first and second respectively in the women’s track sprint.
The same day, five-time world champion Yulia Efimova took gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke event, ahead of 2012 Olympic champion Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, who settled for silver.
After four days of competition Russia tops the European Championships medals table with 11 golds, six silvers and five bronze.
Italy sits second with seven gold medals, while Great Britain rounds out the top three with six gold medals.
