Female candidates dominating US primaries

Votes are being counted after 12 American states held ballots to decide party candidates ahead of November's mid-term general election.

The hotly-contested US Primaries are expected to trim the Obama administration's Democratic majority in Congress.

This election season, at least in the primaries, has seen a spike in the number of women competing for office.
