Chris Matthews apologizes for comparing executive privilege to losing virginity

Things got a little weird on MSNBC talk show Hardball, when Chris Matthews was forced to apologize after an ill-advised comparison between executive privilege and virginity left his guest, Senator Kamala Harris, visibly cringing.

The conversation between the 73-year old MSNBC host and the Democratic presidential hopeful –about Attorney General William Barr’s Senate testimony – might be the last place one would expect a racey joke. That is probably part of why Harris looked so surprised and uncomfortable with Matthew’s metaphor, which was made at least with the intention of challenging the idea of the White House invoking executive privilege to protect former counsel Donald McGahn from a subpoena.

I guess the question is once he’s testified before Mr. Mueller’s special counsel investigation, how can he now say I won’t make the same testimony in public, claiming executive privilege. I think it is sort of like virginity, kinda. Once you start talking about a matter in your jurisdiction and then you say, “oh, I’m not doing it anymore.

I’m not gonna go with you on that metaphor Chris,” Harris replied, when asked if she agreed.

Although the interview went on as normal at first, Matthews returned to the comment a few minutes later to offer an apology. After saying sorry, he indicated that he had “been admonished already” about the metaphor, adding that he “shouldn’t have used it in this context.

Barr said it was still unclear whether McGahn would testify before Congress. His earlier testimony played a major role in Robert Mueller’s report on alleged Russian ‘interference’ in the 2016 presidential elections.
