Smiles amid bloodbath: Twitter points out bad optics of US embassy opening during Gaza massacre
Twitter users were quick to point out the competing visuals and bad optics on a day when US officials were touting the opening of the new embassy as a “magnificent tribute to peace.”
Many users pointed out the images of White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner and wife Ivanka Trump smiling and laughing at the opening of the embassy with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while protesters, among them children, were shot dead in Gaza.
Others pointed out the hypocrisy of top US and Israeli officials rubbing shoulders and talking about peace as bullets rained down on protesters a mere 50 miles away.

I really hope everyone remembers the optics from today..that while people were being slaughtered in Gaza, Ivanka trump and Jared Kushner clapped and smiled.. pic.twitter.com/fovipfOVZQ— RespectMyGame 💅🏽 (@battletested5) May 14, 2018
There’s Jared Kushner, working hard to bring peace to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict presumably... at the opening of the US Embassy in the divided city of Jerusalem. 37 Palestinians dead today so far from Israeli sniper fire at protests against the embassy and #Gaza blockade. pic.twitter.com/jMKPjdiYoc— Mark_Coughlan (@Mark_Coughlan) May 14, 2018
No cloud for Jared and Ivanka, they are smiling broadly while the MidEast explodes. It’s not a good look for the family that wishes to be royal, but are nothing but criminals. https://t.co/n2FxeUI8Ef— Barbara Malmet (@B52Malmet) May 14, 2018

Jared and Ivanka partying it up in Jerusalem while Israeli forces massacre Palestinians in Gaza is a level of depravity you can only find in the Trump and Netanyahu administrations.— Eugene Gu, MD (@eugenegu) May 14, 2018
Watching Netanyahu's speech being telecast globally, calling it a glorious and historical day while Gaza witnesses perhaps the worst bloodbath in years. Tyranny has a face.— Rana Ayyub (@RanaAyyub) May 14, 2018
