Hunt supports Williamson’s sacking while Labour condemns govt for failing to ‘sort out their mess’

The UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt supported the dismissal of Britain’s Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson. The Shadow Defense Secretary Nia Griffith has called for an investigation into the matter.

“On a personal level I’m very sorry about what happened for Gavin’s sake but, given the gravity of the situation, there was no other alternative outcome,” Hunt told journalists as he arrived in Addis Ababa as part of his African tour.

Williamson had been fired earlier on Wednesday, after Prime Minister Theresa May said she’d received “compelling evidence” of his complicity in a leak of information from last week’s security council meeting, during which the ministers agreed to allow the Chinese tech giant Huawei to play a non-essential part in the development of the British 5G network.

The sacked defense secretary maintained his innocence by saying that he refuses to accept the very fact that he or anyone from his staff could be involved in the disclosure.

Meanwhile, the opposition Labour Party called for a criminal investigation into the incident. The Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith attacked the Tory government, saying that it is “incapable of sorting out their own mess.”

“Conservative infighting has undermined the basic functioning of government, and has now potentially put security at risk,” she said in a tweet, urging the police to “investigate” the issue.
