AUKUS pact means China can strike Australia with nuclear weapons if war breaks out (E1056)

On this episode of Going Underground, we firstly speak to Victor Gao, vice president of the Center for China and Globalization. He discusses Western navies sailing close to China as it marked its 72nd National Day, the West using freedom of navigation to challenge China’s sovereignty, and the recent energy crisis in China and its causes. He also looks at the AUKUS security pact between Australia, the UK and the United States, which would provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. He explains why this would mean Canberra would no longer be safe from a nuclear strike should the horror of a war between China and the US and its allies occur. Finally, we speak to Palestine’s ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot. He discusses the damage of the Israeli occupation and Covid-19 on the Palestinian economy as a UN report called 2020 the worst year for Palestine since the creation of the Palestinian Authority. He also outlines the measures Israel employs to handicap the Palestinian economy, and discusses Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer distancing himself from the vote at the party’s conference that labeled Israel an apartheid state. Zomlot discusses Britain’s weak enforcement of international law when it comes to supporting Israel and buying goods from occupied territories, the recently canceled Palestinian elections and how Israel has sabotaged them, and much more!
