Turkey arrests another suspect over assassination of Russia’s ambassador in 2016 – report

Turkish authorities have reportedly arrested a member of a terrorist group in connection with the assassination of Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov. The envoy was assassinated at an Ankara art gallery on December 19, 2016 by Mevlut Altintas, an off-duty police officer who was shot dead by police during a standoff. On Monday, security agencies in Ankara arrested the wife of a man formerly employed by the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority. He was also identified as a senior member of what Ankara describes as Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) and the superior of Altintas. The man was arrested in April, while his wife was also identified as a suspect due to using the terrorist group’s encrypted messaging app ByLock and having worked at FETO-linked companies, Anadolu news agency reported. Late last year, six people were reportedly arrested over the assassination, including three police officers.
