‘Moscow Suburbs United’ – two Premier League sides announce plans for merger
It has been announced that two Russian Premier League clubs, Saturn and Khimki, are planning to merge in a bid to survive the current global economic downturn.
The unprecedented move was made public by the Moscow region governor's office following lengthy consultations with both Russian football authorities and the respective clubs.
The new club will play under the name of Saturn, but will have two home grounds – one in Ramenskoe and the other in Khimki.
Saturn finished 11th in the league this year, with Khimki close behind them in 14th.
If the planned merger goes through, the vacant spot created in the Premier League will go to KAMAZ as they finished third in last season's Russian First Division.
