Vessel rescued from month-long ice trap

Two icebreakers in Russia's Far East have rescued a fifth and final ship that had been stuck in ice for nearly a month.

When the icebreakers have refueled they will return to escort another ship to open waters. It is currently in a safe zone following its rescue.

Three ships found themselves stranded on December 30, with a combined crew of around 400.

Less than a week later, two more vessels became stuck.

A rescue operation was launched, but the thickness of the ice hampered efforts to reach the ships.

Strong winds, low visibility and shifting ice floes added to the problem.
