10 dead, 73 injured after train derails in Turkey

Ten people have been killed and 73 others have been wounded after a train derailed in northwest Turkey, according to a government official cited by local media. The incident occurred near the Greek border.

The incident occurred when five carriages of the train, which was carrying 362 people, came off the tracks near the Greek border. It happened after heavy rain and a landslide onto the tracks, according to officials cited by Reuters.

Television images showed carriages turned on their sides and medics at the site.

The train was traveling from Uzunkopru, Edirne province, to Istanbul when it derailed near Sarilar village in Tekirdag’s Corlu district, according to Anadolu.

The mayor of Sarilar, Fuat Doner, said it is "very difficult to reach the area by car...air support is needed to evacuate the wounded," Dogan News Agency reported.
