Police in the city of Sao Bernardo do Campo, in Brazil, have arrested two men for torturing a 17-year-old boy by tattooing his forehead with the words, “I am a thief and a loser,” as punishment for trying to steal a bike.

"I asked them to make the tattoo on my arm but they said they would do it on my forehead and started laughing," the boy told the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper.

"I begged them to break my arms and legs instead," he added. The boy’s family say he has mental health problems and uses drugs.

Maycon Wesley Carvalho dos Reis, 27, and Ronildo Moreria de Araújo, 29, were identified by police after they uploaded a video of the torture online. The two men also cut the teen’s hair after he attempted to hide the tattoo. Both have confessed to the crime.

The victim's family said he went messing on May 31 and recognized the boy from the video which was uploaded on Friday. He was reunited with his family on Sunday.

An online crowdfunding campaign has been launched by the Afroguerrila collective to have the tattoo removed and has raised 19,000 reals ($5,800, £4,500). The money raised will pay for the removal, any legal fees in the case against the torturers, psychological counseling and addiction treatment.

"I'm going to wipe his forehead clean, even if we have to live under a bridge," Eliana Rocha de Carvalho, the boy's grandmother, told Folha.
