Twitter’s Apple HomePod verdict: ‘It looks like a roll of toilet paper’

The unveiling of Apple’s brand new smart speaker, the HomePod, has descended into farce after netizens swiftly compared it to a roll of toilet paper – among other things.

The long-rumored rival to the Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers was revealed at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference Monday.

The standalone Bluetooth speaker includes Siri functions, allowing users to ask the appliance questions and control smart home accessories.

Apple says the $349 HomePod will be rolled out from December, initially being sold in Australia, the UK and the US. It will also be available in two colors: white and space gray.

For many tech fans, however, the new device’s minimalist appearance overshadowed its technical prowess – and in true Twitteratti fashion, a meme was born.
