Several people have been stabbed at a Manchester city shopping mall. Police used a taser to apprehend a suspect in the attack, and the area has been evacuated and cordoned off.

Police say five people were assaulted with a knife close to Manchester’s Arndale shopping center. It’s not known if the stabbings resulted in any fatalities.

A dramatic video posted to social media shows officers deploying a Taser on a man as they pin him to the pavement.

A witness said told the Manchester Evening News that two people were ”randomly stabbing people” in the shopping mall.

"A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of serious assault. He has been taken to custody for questioning," a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said. Counter-terrorism specialists are leading the investigation into the attack, and are currently trying to determine if the stabbing spree was an act of terrorism.

Public transport in the surrounding area has been temporarily shut down.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked police and emergency services for their swift response to the attack, adding that his thoughts were with all those who were injured and affected.
