Environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion have taken their protests to the heart of Britain’s financial district, by glueing themselves to the London Stock Exchange and climbing onto the roof of a train at Canary Wharf.
The group, which has staged two weeks of protests in the capital, say they are targeting the area because “the financial industry is responsible for funding climate and ecological destruction.”
Five men and women wearing black suits, red ties and gold helmets glued themselves together to block the entrance to the building, early on Thursday morning.
An hour later, protesters brought a train service to a halt in Canary Wharf, home to a multitude of financial businesses, after climbing onto the roof of a DLR train.
They produced banners with messages aimed at grabbing the attention of London Mayor Sadiq Khan after he called on protests to come to an end to allow “business as usual” to return. The banners read: “Business as usual = death” and “Don’t jail the canaries.”
It marks the final day of the group’s demonstrations that have caused major disruption across the streets of London. The action gained extensive media coverage, pushing the debate over global climate change to the forefront of people’s minds.
Extinction Rebellion demonstrations, which included protesters setting up camps in iconic London areas such as Oxford Circus, Waterloo Bridge, Parliament Square and Marble Arch, have seen over 1,000 people arrested, since they began on April 15.
