London fire brigades were able to bring a massive fire that has engulfed a five-storey building of flats in West Hampstead, in the British capital, under control.

Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines battled the blaze at Welbeck Mansions on Inglewood Road for hours, before finally overcoming the inferno, the London Fire Brigade said.

“Due to concerns that the roof could collapse inward, firefighters evacuated residents from the top floor. In addition, fire crews assisted two people from the first floor and a number of other residents self-evacuated from lower floors,” Station Manager Clainton Murray said in a press release. “Around 50 residents are using a local public house as a rest center.”

Footage from the scene showed firefighters hosing down the flames as first responders try to contain the fire from spreading into nearby buildings. The 19-century Victorian mansion engulfed by the flames could be seen from miles away across London. The London Ambulance Service have confirmed that no one was taken to hospital as a result of this incident.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation and firefighters have proceeded to carry out salvage operations to save residents' possessions from water damage.

"The fire is believed to have started in a flat on the fourth floor. The flat was severely damaged by fire and a large part of the roof was also destroyed. In the early stages the fire was very visible and could be seen for miles around," Murray said.
