Emergency services closed a stretch of the M20 motorway between London and Dover in England's southeast after a footbridge collapsed onto a truck. Police say one person is being treated for "non-life-threatening injuries."

It's believed a truck collided with the bridge on Saturday, which is located between junctions 3 and 4 near the town of Maidstone in Kent, causing it to collapse.

Nobody is buried underneath the rubble but a motorcyclist aged in their 50s is understood to have been transported to hospital for suspected broken ribs suffered as a result of the bridge collapse.

The road, which is the main route to the Channel Tunnel and the Port of Dover for travelling on to France, has been closed in both directions and will be "for some time," according to Highways England. Traffic is understood to be very heavy in the area as a result.

"If you are within the closure please remain with your vehicle. We will be releasing traffic by u-turning vehicles," Highways England tweeted.

Images on social media show half of the bridge collapsed across the road with a truck's roof scraped away by the overpass, which was reportedly undergoing repair work. Parts of the truck's broken roof can be seen strewn across the road.
