Brexiteers obsessing over sovereignty should consider moving to North Korea, according to Tory ex-PM John Major, while UKIP’s Nigel Farage urges a focus on mass immigration.
Major told the BBC Friday that what he termed “splendid isolation” would leave Britain in a weaker position and lamented that he had to hear “Brexit people producing soundbites that are either offensive or inaccurate or just plain silly” day after day.
Seconds later he followed up with "If you want undiluted sovereignty in the modern age, when everybody is interconnected, then go to North Korea because that is where you will get it.”
Major suggested that Brexit campaigners falsely made it appear that the UK was “entrapped in the clutches of an evil empire.”
"It is certainly true that we share sovereignty. We take some sovereignty from other people, we share some of ours,” he said.
At an event in London on Thursday evening, UKIP leader and arch-Brexiteer Nigel Farage urged Britons to focus on the perils of mass migration, adding that the current Home Secretary had not given sufficient weight to the topic.
“Theresa May says it’s difficult to control immigration as part of the EU. She’s wrong – it’s not difficult, it’s impossible,” he said, before urging his audience to put mass immigration at the center of their politics.
“If we are to leave the EU this issue must be at the front and center of the Brexit campaign. The only way we can control immigration is by leaving the EU,” he said.
Farage’s intervention came only hours after a YouGov poll indicated he was more trusted on the EU than ‘Remain’ proponent Prime Minister David Cameron.
The study found that 23 percent of those asked trusted Farage’s veracity, while only 20 percent felt inclined to believe the PM.
