A resurgent Tiger Woods has snatched his latest victory from under the nose of Padraig Harrington, overcoming a three shot deficit to win the WGC Bridgestone Invitational by four shots.
It was a real see-saw battle between the Irishman and the world number one.
Harrington looked comfortable at the start of the day, with a three stroke cushion over Woods, and was the model of consistency parring every hole on the front nine.
But, while he was playing safe, Woods was on fire. An eagle and three birdies moved him clear of Harrington at the turn.
Then a wobble from Woods, and a couple of bogeys, put the Irishman back on top by a shot.
But a nightmare 16th for Harrington decided the tournament. Woods hit an almost perfect approach to the green just inches from the hole to guarantee a birdie.
Harrington found the rough, and his next shot was a real stinker, going straight into the water. The triple-bogey eight saw his one shot lead turn into a three shot deficit.
And when Woods hit a birdie at the final hole, which was good enough for a four shot victory.
That is his 70th win on the PGA tour – three short of Jack Nicklaus and 12 off Sam Snead’s all-time record.
