Legendary American bicycle road racer Lance Armstrong has broken his collarbone during the first stage of Castilla.

On Monday, Armstrong was taken to the Rio Carrion hospital in Palencia after falling during the first stage of the five-day Vuelta of Castilla and Leon race.

Armstrong fell in a rider pile-up about 20 kilometers from the stage's finish. A few hours later, doctors confirmed what Armstrong’s fans feared most  – the seven-time Tour de France champion, who is making a comeback to cycling and is riding with the Astana team in the Castilla and Leon race, has a broken collarbone.

Armstrong needs surgery now and questions still remain about whether he'll be able to contend for an eighth Tour de France title in July.
