Russia has added two more medals to its bag after Wednesday night’s action at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

Olga Kucherenko leapt 6m 84cm in the women's long jump to reach for a bronze medal.

Ineta Radevica of Latvia and Portuguese Naide Gomes both showed the result of 6m 92cm, but the victory was given to the Latvian as she recorded a longer jump on her second attempt.

Another medal came in the Women’s 10,000 meters, where reigning European champion Inga Abitova failed to defend her title.

She picked up a silver, finishing behind confident winner, Ethiopian-born Elvan Abeylegesse, who now represents Turkey.

She broke from the other runners early and maintained a comfortable lead throughout to finish in 31 minutes 10 seconds.

Abitova produced an impressive performance on the final laps, moving out of the pack and beating Portugal's Jessica Augusto, who came home third.

”In fact, I am very pleased with my result. Very pleased. Maybe I haven’t yet realized what happened. It will take some time and everything will be fine,” Abitova told Ves Sport website.

”My rivals were a great stimulus for me. One or another was running ahead of me. And the Turk in red shorts became a great stimulus to try to catch up with her,” she added.

Russia has so far won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the championships.
