Football star Mohamed Salah swapped the red of a Liverpool short for the red carpet as he attended the glitzy Time 100 Gala in New York after he was included among the magazine’s ‘100 most influential people’.

Salah was one of six cover stars for the magazine’s recent annual edition of big names from the world of entertainment and beyond.

The  26-year-old Egyptian had been chosen by TV personality John Oliver, who hailed him as “an iconic figure” in his piece on the football star.

Salah himself used the opportunity to call for better treatment of women, especially in Egypt and the Middle East, as he was interviewed during the photoshoot.

And on Monday, Salah jetted into New York for the lavish bash, where he joined some A-level names from the world of entertainment and sport such as pop megastar Taylor Swift, TV presenter Jimmy Fallon, model Naomi Campbell, and wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

A tuxedoed Salah even snagged a photo with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. Clarke’s character in the hit series, Daenerys Targaryen, is currently locked in a battle for the Iron Throne in the concluding episodes of the show – but some social media users joked that the man dubbed ‘The Egyptian King’ was the real heir.

Salah made the most of his trip to NYC, also sharing pictures of himself sampling some local pizza.

His attention will return to business matters in the next few days, as Liverpool approach their Premier League clash with Huddersfield on Friday night.

The Reds are locked in a tense race with Manchester City as the Anfield club bid for their first league title in 29 years.
