Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris, who won the World Cup with France in Russia this summer, was detained for seven hours by English police after failing a 2.20am breathalyzer test in central London on Friday.
The 31-year old was pulled over by police in Gloucester Park, where he failed the drink-driving test before being taken to Charing Cross police station, where he had his mugshot, fingerprints and a DNA swab taken, according to a report in the Sun. It was reported that he spent seven hours in police custody before being charged and subsequently released on bail to appear in court next month.
“A man has been charged following a routine patrol stop in Gloucester Place, W1,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
“Hugo Lloris, 31, of East Finchley, was charged with drink driving on Friday, 24 August. He has been bailed to return to Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11 September.”
The news will come as a blow not just to Lloris, but to his club. The Frenchman has been captain at Tottenham Hotspur since 2015 and has made more than 200 appearances for the London club. He is the most capped goalkeeper in French international football history.
Lloris was an important part of the victorious France side at Russia 2018, making a string of important saves throughout the tournament as Didier Deschamps’ team won their first World Cup since 1998.
