Goal-line technology, also known as the Goal Decision System, will be implemented during the matches of the Confederations Cup 2017, which will be hosted by four Russian cities.
The system can assess if the ball has completely crossed the goal line in between the goalposts and underneath the crossbar with the assistance of electronic devices, aiding the referee in the decision to award a goal or not.
It was first used at a big tournament in 2014, during the World Cup in Brazil.
In the group stage match between France and Honduras, Honduran goalkeeper Noel Valladares dropped a shot from Karim Benzema into the goal but quickly retrieved it from behind the line.
The ball’s path across the line was immediately tracked by the system, making it the first case of a World Cup goal given by the technology.
The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup matches will be played from June 17 to July 2 in the cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi and Kazan.
The tournament will feature the holders of each of the six FIFA confederation championships (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, OFC), along with the FIFA World Cup holder and the host nation, bringing the number of teams up to eight.
