If the American approach to the world could be reduced to one bumper sticker, it may well be this, ‘perception is reality’. Coined in the early 1980s by prominent Republican strategist Lee Atwater, it made ample use of falsehoods and dirty tricks, but nonetheless proved effective in securing the presidential victories of Ronald Reagan and George H.
