We all woke up at the beginning of this month to shocking news coming out of Venezuela. In a lightning nighttime raid, US special forces sped into Caracas amid overwhelming fire power, assaulted the presidential palace, and managed to extract President Nicolas Maduro without suffering a single casualty. It all seemed so unreal. But the consequences may not be so unreal as the US now faces an unstable situation in Venezuela and the prospects of a damaged reputation throughout Latin America. Will the Trump Administration’s new iteration of the Monroe Doctrine bring stability to the region, or further chaos?
