Sasha Meets Russia – Khakassia: The Land of Five Elements

Sasha, an American with Russian roots, continues her journey across Russia and is heading to Khakassia. The wilderness of this Siberian region remains largely untouched, and nomadic traditions are re-emerging in modern life. Here, air, water, earth, and fire become one. So why is this region called the ‘land of five elements’?

The fifth element is culture! There is something truly mystical in Khakassia that you can’t avoid feeling. Traditions live on in music, crafts, and in the people themselves. You can even find shamans here – intermediaries who create harmony between people and the natural elements.

Siberian recipes also hold many secrets. Traditional dishes of lamb and Sayan trout, the milk vodka araka, sweet talgan dessert, and fragrant herbal tea: all of this paints a picture of a mysterious yet warm destination, where love for one’s homeland, its people, and its customs is passed down from generation to generation to this day.
