Cleaning the Arctic

Cleaning the Arctic

In Soviet times the Arctic was famous for its scientific institutions and research facilities, including the deepest well in the world. But now labs, gear and chemicals are abandoned and cause acid rain there. Furthermore, a large share of waste is washed into the sea. Eco-volunteers willing to change the situation started the ‘Clean Arctic’ project. However, a major obstacle to addressing Arctic pollution is not contamination itself. Local authorities treat the piles of the trash collected by volunteers as illegal dump sites and demand special permission. It creates additional difficulties. What can be done to preserve the unique Arctic nature?
